Sugical Extraction

If a tooth has been broken or affected by decay, your dentist will try to treat it with a filling, crown or other treatment. Sometimes, if there is too much damage for the tooth then it needs to be extracted or treated with other surgical procedures. The surgical extraction is a complex procedure and used if a tooth has broken off at the gum line or has not come into the mouth yet.

Procedure

  • Your dentist or oral surgeon will take an X-ray of the area to help plan the best way to treat the affected tooth.

  • The doctor makes a small incision into your gums.

  • For a surgical extraction, you will receive a local anesthetic, and you may also have intravenous anesthesia. Some people may require general anesthesia. They include patients having specific medical or behavioral conditions and young children.

Benefits

  • The usage of antibiotics used in the procedure reduces the risk of infections by 70% and lowers the incidence of dry socket.
